Blue & Brown Ike Dollar Special

Why Are They Called Blue & Brown Eisenhower Dollars?
.gif of blue and brown packaged eisenhower dollars

To answer that question I will start by giving you some general information about the Eisenhower dollar series.

Ike dollars were first minted in 1971. Clad composition coins for general circulation were minted at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. That same year they also minted a 40% Silver Uncirculated issue at the San Francisco Mint. These coins were sealed in a poly package along with a plastic token and placed into a Blue envelope. Coin dealers adopted the term Blue-Pack or Blue Ike's when referring to these coins.

In addition to the general circulation Clad issues of 1971 and the 40% Silver Uncirculated Blue-Pack issues the Mint also minted a Clad composition Proof issue which went into the Proof sets, and a 40% Silver Ike in Proof which was mounted into a rigid plastic case and placed into a cardboard box with a red velvet lining and a sliding cover. Coin dealers refer to these 40% Silver Proof issues as the Brown Ike's.

Eisenhower dollars in this Blue and Brown type packaging were only minted for 4 short years, 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974. No Eisenhower dollars were minted with the 1975 date as the Mint devoted all their efforts into producing the 1976 Bicentennial Commemorative issue.

Also, there were no Ike dollars dated 1973 issued for general circulation. The entire production of 1973 Clad dollars that year went into the production of the Government issued Mint sets.

Compared to the Clad composition coinage that was minted for general circulation both the Blue and Brown Ike's have extremely low mintages.

You can see by the mintage figures that 1971 was the banner year and by 1972 the excitement of these new Blue and Brown Ike's waned and production dropped to the point that the U.S. Mint discontinued the Blue and Brown Eisenhower program at the end of 1974.

The Blue and Brown Ike's are a great item to add to your collection for several reasons.

  • Very low mintages on the majority of the years.

  • Many were broken-out from their original packaging by collector's building sets and today original packaged coins are not all that plentiful.

  • An unknown amount were melted during the Gold & Silver highs of 1980 when Silver was as high as $50.00 per ounce.

Series 1935 A $1.00 Hawaii Overprint Silver Certificate

.gif of a series 1935A Hawaii 1.00 silver certificate in fine condition

Run your mouse over the note to see the reverse side.

During the early days of WWII, the U.S. had fears that Japan would overrun Hawaii. If this occurred, large sums of currency could have been captured and used to fund their war effort. So, the U.S. decided to issue the same $1 Silver Certificates as used on the mainland, but with a brown seal and serial numbers and overprinted with the word "HAWAII" twice on the front and in large block letters on the reverse side of the note.

Because these notes were distinctive, it would make it easy for the U.S. to demonetize the notes if large amounts fell into enemy hands. Later in the war, these notes were used in the U.S. held Pacific Islands for the same reasons.

Although these historic notes were somewhat plentiful many years ago they have all disappeared from circulation and today are a real collector's item.

The Series 1935E and 1935F $1.00 Silver Certificates although they are not as Scarce or as difficult to locate as the Series 1928 or 1934, they are by far in much shorter supply than the Series 1957 notes which was the last $1.00 Silver Certificate issued. Scarce Series 1963 $10.00 Federal Reserve Star Note
District 7 Chicago Illinois

.gif of a series 1963 10.00 federal reserve star note

Run your mouse over the note to see the reverse side.

A “star” note is a genuine legal tender bank note, but it is printed separately from regular bank notes. It is identified by a Star (*) in the prefix or suffix position of the serial number. These Star notes are typically used to replace a note that for some reason such as faulty printing, torn paper, or excess inking, was damaged in the printing process.

Whenever an error is discovered, the offending bank note is removed and it is replaced with a Star note. Even though the printing of bank notes is a streamlined and technical process mistakes do happen but not that often when you consider the millions upon millions of notes printed daily.

Consequently, Star notes are seldom encountered – especially in Choice Uncirculated condition and are a Prized item by currency collector’s. The note in this Special is considered a Scarce note.
