Originally published in 1944, this new and revised edition of Newcomb's large cents 1816-1857, is the most authoritative reference works for identifying varieties within the large cent series for that time period.

I quote in its entirety from the forward of the book which was written by John D. Wright of Saint Joseph, Michigan, who is a leading authority on large cents.

"Howard Rounds Newcomb was a master in the lore of the old American coppers he loved. Across a quarter-century period he and George H. Clapp wrote the standard reference works on large cent varieties for all but the first two years of their issue. The five books they wrote individually or in collaboration revealed a coherence and clarity that was desperately wanting in this popular series of coins.

While Clapp's forte was sketches and general discussion, Newcomb was known for his meticulous attention to detail and die-states. And nowhere is this meticulous attention more evident than in this, his final solo work, which totally eclipsed the Frank Andrews pamphlet on which it was based.

Although the works of Clapp and Newcomb on 1795-1814 cents have been admirably superseded by William H. Sheldon's book, Newcomb's opus on 1816-1857 cents has remained the standard for forty years. This reference has guided two generations of collectors through the details of this fascinating series.

Until recently no author has tried to do more than add an occasional die-state note or new variety to Newcomb's atlas, but the last decade has seen a huge upsurge in interest and published information on these coins.
