Even the most advanced VAM collectors are confused about 1879-S reverse of 1979 attributions and are still not yet aware of the relative rarity of the VAM's in this series. Without the existence of adequate literature, confusion reigns supreme in attempts to correctly attribute these coins.

Even certified coins with VAM attributions are suspect as to correct attribution. A group of numismatist involved in a collaborative research effort have seen numerous examples of miss-attributed varieties in holders.

The 1879-S reverse of 1878 series remains as one of the last frontiers in Morgan Dollars where it is possible to cherry pick rare die varieties (VAM's.)
