Roman Emperor Constans

Youngest son of Constantine the Great

AD 333 - 350

Flavius Julius Constans was born circa AD 320 and became Caesar in AD 333. The sudden death of Constantine the Great in AD 337 created a crisis leadership. The three sons of the deceased met in Pannonia to divide up the empire among themselves. Constans was assigned to rule over Italy, Africa, Illyricum, Macedonia, and Achaea. Incidentally, he had become engaged to Olympias, the daughter of a Praetorian Prefect. This marriage was continually postponed for political reasons and also because of his homosexual proclivities.

In the opinion of the great Edward Gibbon in his "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". . . "The system by Constantine (the great) was displaced in the feeble administration of his sons: who, by their vices and weakness, soon lost the esteem and affections of their people. The pride assumed by Constans . . . was rendered more contemptible by his want of abilities and application. . ."

In AD 340 his brother, Constantine II, invaded territories but was defeated and killed, thus leaving Constans master of the western half of the empire. In 343 he visited Britain, the last reigning monarch to do so, in order to repel the Picts and Scots.

The first part of his reign was moderate: in later years, however, he became quite a tyrant. Like his father Constans had deep interest in Christianity. Through his influence, the council of Serdica was called and which settled most of the ecclesiastical squabbles of the day.

In AD 350, while on a hunting expedition in Gaul, he received word that Magnentius had rebelled and that some of his legions had joined the revolt. Constans therefore fled in the direction of Spain but was overtaken and murdered near the fortress of Helene at the foot of the Pyrenees.
