Roman Caesar and Emperor Constantine II
Eldest son of Constantine the Great
AD 317 - 337
Constantine II became a devout Christian like his father Constantine the Great. His father had such a gigantic responsibility that he appointed hid son to help him. He had him rule Britain, France and Spain.
He quarreled with his brother Constans which resulted in military defeat and his death.
A brief biographical sketch:
Flavius Claudius Constantinus was born at Arles in February, AD 317. On March 1 in the same year he was created Caesar. He gained the credit of the victories of his generals over the Alamanni (331), and over the Goths (332). From 335 he administered the Gallic portion of the empire as Caesar till his father's death, May 22, AD 337. On September 9 in the same year he assumed the title of Augustus, together with his brothers Constans and Constantius, and in 338 a meeting was held at Viminiacum, on the border of Pannonia, to arrange the distribution of the empire. By virtue of his seniority he claimed a kind of control over his brothers. Constans declined to submit and Constantine demanded from Constans the cession of Africa and equal authority in Italy. In 340 Constantine invaded Italy but was killed near Aquileia.
