Roman Emperor Tetricus II
Son of Roman Emperor Tetricus I
AD 270 - 273
Reliable information regarding this young man has been difficult to obtain. Even Edward Gibbon's "The Decline and Fall Of The Roman Empire," which was published in England in 1776, had to be used.
After the murder of Emperor Victorinus in AD 270, who by his amorous behavior, had incurred the wrath of a jealous husband, the volatile armies were held in check by Victoria, mother of the slain Victorinus. Victoria had considerable wealth, power and influence Terricus II and his father were selected by her to assume the purple.
The brief reign of this father-son duo was characterized by political instability, inflation, and barbarian incursions. The joint Emperors pretended for the sake of patriotism to be at war with Aurelian in secret. However, they had confided their desire to step down to relinquish their crowns and live as private citizens. Tragically, many soldiers loyal to the Tetricii lost their lives before the secret plans became fully known. The final battle was fought near Chalons in Champagne.
In the descriptive words of historian Edward Gibbon:
". . . Dismayed by the unexpected treachery of their chief (the Tetricii), (they) defended themselves with a desperate valour, till they were cut in pieces almost to a man, in this bloody and memorable battle. . . "
After their capitulation, Tetricus II and his father were permitted to build a magnificent palace. When completed, Emperor Aurelian was even invited for supper, etc.
Tetricus II lived a long, peaceful, and prosperous life as a Roman citizen. Many of his later years were spent as a revered member of the Roman senate.
