Roman Emperor Victorinus - Defender of Gaul
AD 268 - 270
Victorinus reigned during a tumultuous time in the Empire. The economy was ravaged with inflation and it was a challenge to prevent the incursions of the "Barbarians." He Was considered to be an efficient administrator and talented general. After the death of Emperor Philip, the structure of the Empire began to disintegrate. The armies of Rome were no longer able to control the whole Empire, and various leaders staked out their own areas. Spain, for example, seceded soon after Victorinus" accession. There were also troubles in Augustodumum. Victorinus succeeded in taking the city after a siege of seven months, however.
Victoria, his mother, had considerable influence over him at times, but historians are perplexed by the paucity of information regarding her.
His reign came to an end abruptly. He fell in love with the wife of one of his own officers. Apparently the Emperor was caught during an act of love, and was murdered by the irate husband!
