Roman Emperor Caracalla
AD 196 - 212
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (Caracalla) was born at Lugdunum, Gaul in A.D. 188. He was the elder son of Septimuis Severus and Julia Domna. He was raised to the rank of Caesar (Junior Emperor) in A.D. 198. That meant he became the assistant Emperor of the entire Roman Empire at age 8!
In A.D. 202 his father arranged his marriage to Plautilla. Even though he was only 14 years old. These events may explain why the coins struck by Caracalla during these years portray him as a youngster— which he was.
Perhaps the heavy responsibilities placed upon him in his childhood may have contributed to his cruel and unstable nature. He even arranged for the murder of his younger brother, Geta, is his mother's apartment in the palace. At this point, he was to become sole Emperor of Rome and his youthful coin portraits would end.
